Meet Our Scholars
Ruxanda Ursu
Ruxanda Ursu is currently in Year 12 and her EPQ project is on ‘Differences between the legal systems of developed and underdeveloped countries’. Her internship at a ‘shelter’ temporary home for the needy allowed her to experience first-hand how the law can provide a vital refuge for vulnerable people who are suffering from injustice. This made her determined to pursue the difficult academic path of studying law.
Travelling thousands of miles to refine her academic study at WASCZ was the perfect opportunity for her. The interdisciplinary competitions and diverse sports programmes here have also made her more confident and committed, qualities that are helping her on her path to becoming a lawyer. Ruxanda commented how her academic journey has been supported by her teachers, saying:
“Mr. Fosu has given me a lot of advice on studying law and submitting university applications, telling me that if you think you can do it, then you should do it.”
Backed by Mr. Fosu’s advice and encouragement, she gained confidence, leading to an interview with the Faculty of Law at the University of Cambridge. We look forward to seeing her knocking on the door of this top university in the future.
Raymond Kaliuta
Raymond Kaliuta, currently in Year 11, has already set his sights on a business career. Whether as a businessman or a future entrepreneur, he actively draws on all the resources available at WASCZ as he maps out his academic path. As a basketball and rugby team member and someone who also enjoys scuba diving, he has also never stopped thinking about his passion for sports.
His passion for his academic and extracurricular pursuits is evident, both in his role as the CEO in the ASIA Business Simulation competition in October and his exploration of the intersection between sports and economics in his EPQ project ‘How Sports Teams Can Contribute to Economic Development,’ which explores how hobbies and academics can be combined. His enthusiasm and dedication are inspiring, and he is clearly on the path to great success.
Zoë Capps
Zoë Capps vividly described her mood before coming to China. She has always been extremely interested in China and Chinese culture, and the Wycombe Abbey International Scholarship was an opportunity she couldn’t miss.
In September 2024, after a rigorous selection process that included academic performance, extracurricular activities, and a personal interview, ten international students joined WASHZ, starting the most crucial two years of their high school.
As a performing art student, Zoë has unleashed her musical and artistic talents at WASHZ. At the scholarship programme’s inaugural event, her singing astonished the audience. On the AbbeyFest stage, she delivered three performances that amazed everyone. Now, she serves as the lead singer of the school band and helps with the preparations for the annual musical performance.
It is worth mentioning that Zoë also has the opportunity to help WASHZ KG with their language education. She enters the kindergarten classroom every Monday and Thursday to help teach the children phonics and reading.
“It’s a mix of international students and Chinese students. I find the Chinese students’ English level are surprisingly good. It’s been very nice getting to know them and every single time that I walk into the class now they call me ‘Miss Zoë!’ and it’s really nice to see them so happy!”
